Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia’s First President Elected Directly by the People

When talking about Indonesian leaders, the name Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, or SBY for short, is hard to miss. He was the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia and the first president elected directly by the people through a democratic election in 2004.

SBY is known not only as a politician but also as a soldier, a family man, and even an artist. His life story is a true inspiration about hard work, discipline, and dedication to the nation.

Early Life

SBY was born in Pacitan, East Java, on September 9, 1949. He came from a humble family. His father, R. Soekotjo, was a retired soldier, while his mother, Siti Habibah, was a homemaker who raised him with care and love.

From a young age, SBY showed strong enthusiasm for learning. His dream of becoming a soldier led him to enroll in the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy (AKABRI), where he graduated as the best cadet in 1973.

Military Career and Education

SBY’s military career was outstanding. He was known as a disciplined, intelligent, and high-achieving officer. His journey also took him abroad, where he studied at Fort Benning and later at Webster University in the United States, earning a Master’s degree in Management.

His academic journey continued with a doctoral degree at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), proving his lifelong commitment to education and knowledge, even while at the peak of his career.

Political Journey

After retiring from the military with the rank of Lieutenant General, SBY began his career in politics. He held several important positions, such as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (1999–2000) and Coordinating Minister for Political, Social, and Security Affairs (2000–2004).

The turning point came in 2004, when Indonesians, for the first time in history, directly elected their president. SBY, alongside Jusuf Kalla, won the hearts of the people with his vision for change, becoming the 6th President of Indonesia. He was re-elected in 2009 with Boediono as his vice president.

Leadership Style

During his two terms (2004–2014), SBY was known as a calm, patient, and thoughtful leader in making decisions. He guided Indonesia toward political stability and economic growth following the 1998 crisis.

Under his leadership, Indonesia also gained more recognition on the global stage. SBY actively participated in international forums such as the G20, showcasing Indonesia’s growing role in the world.

Personal Life and Hobbies

Behind his statesman figure, SBY was a warm and family-oriented person. He married Ani Yudhoyono, who stood by his side until her passing in 2019. Together, they had two sons: Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono (Ibas).

SBY also had a strong artistic side. He loved painting, writing, and even composing songs. Some of his works were published and received public attention.

Legacy for Indonesia

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will always be remembered as the first Indonesian president elected directly by the people. He was not only a political figure but also a role model of discipline, perseverance, and dedication to the nation.

His life story reminds us that great leaders are those who can combine knowledge, experience, and compassion to serve their people.
